The bench is slowly, slowly coming together.
In the first pic you can see that one of the four corners is finished. Here you can see there's more to go. The funny thing is that the bench is now my best tool for working on the bench; it's mostly flat, super solid, and I am able to use the leg vise to hold workpieces for the remaining joints.
...with holdfasts! And a benchdog!
The dog may not be pretty, but it works!
In it goes; that little spring at the bottom holds it pretty well in any position.
Flush! I cut the top of the dog at a 2 degree angle so it is flush with the benchtop when all the way down. I suppose this isn't totally necessary, but it looks appealing, and from an engineering standpoint, the more material directly in line behind the clamping surface, the better.
